New Holographic Grunge Hair

Monday, January 23, 2017 Unknown 3 Comments

Make no mistake, this post is 100% about the hair. I went blond six months ago in preparation for the inevitable job search that comes with moving to a new city. I'm happy to announce that I found a job this past week. After I was hired, I asked the all important question: what's your policy regarding unnatural-colored hair. Turns out, they have no policy. Literally, they don't care. As soon as I found this out, off to my stylist I went. I was ready to transform into the beautiful grunge unicorn I prefer to be.

I feel like the personification of the word 'holographic'. In keeping with my shiny new self, I threw on this metallic shift I thrifted while visiting family this past week. I've been wanting to try the shift dress graphic tee layering trend for a while now. I figured I was too busty to pull it off. And yeah, it's a little tight up top but who the hell cares. No ones looking at it anyway, not with hair this rad.

Hint: Everything is Old and Comfy

Forgive the scattered nature of these photographs. I started out in front of a neat gate at a park near my house. It was a standard PNW cloudy afternoon. And then bam! in typical PNW fashion, the sun peaked out of the clouds giving me the most beautiful diffused natural light I've ever seen. I quickly readjusted my camera and my position and started over. Of course, the sun went away about halfway through my pose set. So today you get half fence, half field.

I know I should also address the hair mess on top of my head. I went to sleep in a bun, woke up, and it was like this. It's like a side ponytail that had one too many glasses of wine and I dig it so I left it alone.

Much like this maroon sweater, this piling, fading, threadbare sweatshirt is an old favorite. It's the warmest thing I own that isn't outerwear and until I find a worthy replacement, it's staying in my closet no matter how sad and old it looks.

Sephora 2016 Year End Purchase Review

Sephora 2016 Year End Purchase Review
I saw this Sephora purchase year-end roundup over at Jezebel and decided to take a look at my own purchase history. Holy balls, you guys. It's bad. Real bad. I spent a shit ton of money on makeup this year. Despite the sticker shock, I have to say that I also discovered some products I'll probably use indefinitely (for example, a foundation that actually matches my so pale I'm basically a ghost skin). I thought I'd share in the hopes it will help someone else. This may be especially helpful if your skin is the color of actual corpse.

(I am not affiliated with these products. I will not be compensated in any way if you click on a link.)

Benefit Cosmetics Watt's Up! Cream to Powder Highlighter
$30.00 - Purchased 01/08/2016

If you're pale, this is not for you. You'll look like a shiny yellow ghost instead of a regular ghost. This sat in the drawer for six months before I threw it out - almost full. It's a bad feeling.

Bare Minerals Blemish Remedy Mattifying Prep Gel
$25.00 - Purchased 01/08/2016

If by matte they mean dry your face out to the consistency of a dead sea sponge, then sure. Also, tripled my blemishes. Probably the worst product I bought this year.
Cover FX Natural Finish Foundation in Color N10
$40 - Purchased 01/10/2016

I just bought my second tube of this product. It's a foundation that actually work for my neutral pale skin - not too pink, not too yellow. I apply with a brush or a beauty blender. I give thanks to the makeup gods for this product every damn day.
Urban Decay Vice 4 Palette (out of stock)
$39.00 - Purchased 01/12/2016

I still feel shitty about this purchase. You can tell from the date I rushed out to get this as soon as I found out it was on sale. I'd literally just been in Sephora two days earlier. I used it a handful of times and only four of the colors. Ughhh.

Clinique Chubby Stick Scultping Highlight
$23 - Purchased 01/12/2016

Another blah highlighter for pale skin because you literally can't see it at all. I do think it would look nice on darker skin and it's a nice price point for a Sephora brand.
Sephora Formula X The Effects in Deep End (out of stock)
$5.00 - Purchased 02/16/2016

Wanted a black polish with some texture and found this one on sale for $5. It wasn't terrible but it didn't last that long. It's out of stock now.

Clinique Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub and Lip Balm in Black Honey
$19.50 - Purchased 02/21/2016

I really love Clinique's black honey color but this wasn't special. The scrub was mediocre and the color was barely-there. I'd just get the black honey lipstick or gloss next time.

Sephora Cushion Gloss Eyeliner
$18.00 - Purchased 02/21/2016

My brush was broken and the pot was dried out upon opening. I'm pretty sure I returned it immediately and didn't bother replacing it since it had so many problems.

Make Up Forever Skin Equalizer Primer in Natural Finish
$37.00 - Purchased 02/25/2016

I used the whole tube out of spite to the price but I don't think it ever really did anything. At least it didn't give me blemishy dead sponge face a la Bare Minerals.
Make Up Forever Smokey Extravagant Mascara - Travel Size
$12.00 - Purchased 02/25/2016

Bought after I read an article saying travel sized mascaras are better since mascaras are one of the first things in a makeup kit to expire and should be replaced often. I'm sold and only buy travel sized mascaras now.

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Terre Neuve
$44.00 - Purchased 03/29/2016

It was getting warmer and I wanted lighter coverage. I liked this - it was a good color. I used it all but won't replace because the consistency always felt a little greasy for me.

Buxom Full-On Lip Stick in Pink Taupe
$20.00 - Purchased 04/08/2016

The color wasn't quite right for me but I loved the consistency and staying power of this. I kept using it because I liked how it felt on my lips even though the color wasn't my favorite.

Sephora Bright Future Color Corrector in Yellow
$14.00 - Purchased 04/08/2016

Color correctors started getting big around this time and I jumped on the trend because I am a beauty trend fiend. This didn't do anything for me and I never noticed a difference while using.

Urban Decay 8-Hour Powder Highlighter
$26.00 - Purchased 04/08/2016

Another failed highlighter attempt. I probably should give up on highlighters altogether, huh? This one didn't show up on my pale skin but I'm sure it would look nice on darker complexions.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Mushroom
$20.00 - Purchased 04/08/2016

When I bought this, my hair was purple. This eyeliner and that hair was a match made in heaven. I still use it but when I do I mostly just miss having purple hair

You'll notice the purchase gap here. In late May, my husband and I found out we had to move for his job. They gave us all of about two months to find somewhere to live, pack everything up, and move our entire lives across the country. It's hard to prioritize shopping when your to-do list includes a cross country move. Once I got settled, I got back into it pretty much right away:

Urban Decay Razor Sharp Liquid Liner in Perversion
$22.00 - Purchased 08/05/2016

This had no staying power on me. Even on a fully prepped and primed lid, this lasted maybe two hours before it started flaking and running. Kat Von D tattoo liner for life. I should stop branching out.

Nars Radiant Creamy Concealor in Vanilla
$29.00 - Purchased 08/05/2016

My perfect concealer. Blends seamlessly into the pale abyss that is my face. I'll buy this until the world ends and concealer isn't a necessity anymore.

Nars Pro-Prime Light Optimizing Primer
$35.00 - Purchased 08/05/2016

Not my favorite consistency but did prime pretty well. It was honestly a little sparkly/shiny (I guess that's what "light optimizing" means). Sparkly ghost isn't as cool as it sounds. I won't buy it again. It's hard to find a pale friendly primer.

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Cream Gel in Opal
$29.50 - Purchased 08/05/2016

I honestly don't think this product does anything but I love how it feels on my skin. It's really hard to explain and I probably shouldn't spend thirty bucks on something just because of its face feels.

Nars Illuminator in Copacabana
$30.00 - Purchased 09/02/2016

After months and months, a highlighter that works. It's hard to apply because I'm inept at makeuping in general but it actually shows up and makes me look pretty fancy.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara - Travel Sized
$10.00 - Purchased 09/06/2016

I'm committed to travel sized mascaras. I'm wasting a lot less and spending a lot less.
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion - Travel Sized
$12.00 - Purchased 09/02/2016

Travel sized mascaras made me wonder what else makes sense in travel sized. Turns out, my fave UD shadow primer is a good candidate. I never finish a whole tube before it gets watery and gross. It lasts forever too - purchased this in September. It's January and still not empty.

You'll notice I didn't buy anything for a few months. That's because I started using Ipsy and getting samples monthly really cut down on my need to buy things just to try them. I waste a lot less money on makeup now! If you're interested in trying Ipsy for yourself, I'd appreciate it if you signed up using my referral link! Of course, I'm never going to stop my Sephora obsession completely:

SuperGoop! CC Cream Daily Correct in Fair to Light
$32.00 - Purchased 12/02/2016

Purchased because it's the same color IQ as my fave foundation and I'm still looking for a lighter coverage option. You'll never believe this but it's too light for me. So if anyone's skin is the color corpsier corpse, you'll love this.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Back Door
$17.00 - Purchased 12/20/2016

The grungy 90's revival lipstick I've always wanted. If they ever discontinue this color you'll find me ugly crying in a corner forever. I'm wearing it here.

Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Kit  in Light/Medium
$45.00 - Purchased 12/29/2016

I figured I was too pale for the contouring trend but then I found this. I only use the first color but it's so perfect it's still worth the price. Just take a look at my fake cheekbones and you'll understand.

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer
$36.00 - Purchased 12/29/2016

Still on the fence about this. It feels nice. It's not greasy. But is it actually doing anything? Not sure.
Bvlgari Eau Parfumee Au the Blanc in 1.33oz
$72.00 - Purchased 12/29/2016

I'm very sensitive to smells. I like to wear perfume to bury my nose in if an outside smell overwhelms me. This is utterly perfect. It's delicate and soothing. It's unisex which I prefer since I don't like feminine scents. It lasts for hours. I'll be using this for the rest of my life. In fact, they can spritz me with it before they bury me.

Yup, I bought a lot of makeup. This isn't even counting my Ulta purchases. But, I am pleased to have found some items that are now staples in my routine. A perfect foundation, a contour shade fit for pale skin, and a perfume that makes me happy to spritz on every single morning. I'm excited to see what new makeup trends and products I'm going to try (and probably hate) in 2017!

What was your favorite beauty purchase in 2016? What item do you most regret purchasing?
