Hi, I'm Sam.

Contemporary fashion has never worked for me. I was too short for things, too fat for other things, too pale for certain colors, always too something for something. The pressure I felt to look a certain way led to a lot of body anxiety. Fitting room melt downs were common as I tried on trendy item after trendy item that didn't fit. I felt like something was wrong with my body.

It took me well into my twenties to discover it wasn't my body, it was the clothes that were wrong for me. I was trying to put myself into things that not only didn't fit my shape, but didn't fit my personality either. I have always loved alternative fashion. And then I got to an age where people expected me to stop dressing like that. I have always been told it was a phase I should outgrow.

But I didn't outgrow it. And I've come to learn that I don't have to. This is me. This is what my body feels best in.

Why do I love alternative fashion? It's fashion that says do whatever the hell you want. It's fashion that never asks "can I pull this off?". It's fashion that doesn't care about rules at all. It doesn't care if you're fat or thin or rich or poor or if you've worn that same flannel the last three days in a row. It doesn't care if your favorite jeans came from a thrift store or if you only buy things in the color black. It's fashion that just says fuck it.

So, inspired by the alternative fashion I've always loved, Said the Skeleton says fuck it to archaic and arbitrary body rules. Wear what you like, wear what your body feels best in, and be unapologetic about it.

  1. Hi,Samantha. I know how you feel because I have never had the courage to be me either (and I am waaaaay older than you!). Well done for finding the courage to take the first steps towards changing that. Good luck - I look forward to seeing your progress. Hugs from R.

  2. Utterly brilliant ethos and philosophy of alternative fashion and how it is both empowering and inspiring. You look amazing and your free spirit and healthy attitude is refreshing.

    1. Thank you so much for all of the lovely comments you left on my blog yesterday. It warms my heart that you took time out of your day to offer me such kindness. Though I started this space as a place to be and explore myself, I feel a renewed sense of purpose when others find something of value here.
